October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and hopefully you all have taken notice. It's an important subject as one out of every eight women will actually be effected by this disease in their lifetime. And while we've all heard that having a family member with the disease puts you at a much higher risk for developing it yourself, up to 70% of those who are diagnosed have no family history.
So what causes it? Well, someone wants to find out! Most research done today is aimed at a cure, and while I think that is important for those who are currently trying to survive it, we need to know how to prevent it. Enter Dr. Susan Love.
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation, a global leader in breast cancer research, joined forces to launch the Love/Avon Army of Women.
Thier initiative has two key goals:
- To recruit one million healthy women of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease, to partner with breast cancer researchers and directly participate in the research that will eradicate breast cancer once and for all.
- To challenge the scientific community to expand its current focus to include breast cancer prevention research conducted on healthy women.
